The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) is collaborating with an Accra-based Ghanaian business solutions provider, E ON 3 Group to launch the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coins in honour of the AsanteheneOtumfuo Osei-Tutu II for his outstanding contribution to the peace, stability and development of the country.
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has given authorisation for the minting of the gold coins to honour His Royal Majesty’s successful reign since his ascension to the Golden Stool 22 years ago following his enstoolment on April 26, 1999.
As emphasised by the Executive Director of E ON 3 Group in his correspondence to PMMC on the collaboration, “the essence of this memorable launch is also to acknowledge the King for his tremendous role in helping expand the frontiers of traditional leadership beyond Ghana and the African Continent – a development that has elevated the chieftaincy institution to a much higher pedestal and ushered it into modernity.”
The face of the gold coin will bear the image of the Asantehene with the Adinkra symbols “Bi Nka Bi” and “Mpatapo,” which symbolise peace, harmony, and reconciliation. The reverse of the gold coin will bear an image of the Golden Stool of Asanteman, also known as “Sika Dwa.” Legend has it that the ‘Sika Dwa’ which is the symbol of the soul of the Asante people was commandeered by OkomfoAnokye from the Heavens and landed on the lap of the first Asante King, Otumfuo Osei Tutu I.
Under the collaboration, PMMC as a key partner is expected to market the Commemorative Gold Coins which will be launched at a grand event slated for Sunday the 12th of December, 2021 on the last Akwasidae festival at the Manhyia Palace, Kumasi.
The commemorative coins are to be auctioned to the public and the earnings will be used to establish a Cultural Resource Centre to promote activities related to traditional and customary conflict resolution in the country.
Commemorative coins are specifically designed to record and honour important events, people and places. These commemorative gold coins, will be treasured collectors’ articles as they are of 99.99% assay at 24 carats fine gold, with a diameter of 37.00mm and a weight of 31.104grams each. The coins, which are minted in limited quantities, may be sold at higher values.
The Managing Director of PMMC, Nana AkwasiAwuah, explained that the collaboration with E ON 3 Group goes to reiterate the Company’s position as the National Assayer, as the coins are expected to be assayed by PMMC, where an assay certificate will be issued to assist purchasers who may want to carry them outside the country. PMMC shall also be providing storage services for persons who may want to keep the coins at its newly refurbished underground vault.
“With PMMC’s involvement in the assaying, marketing and selling these commemorative fine gold coins, quality assurance is guaranteed in order to get the real value of the commodity, and this will go a long way to enhance the company’s image,” he opined.
PMMC carries the additional mandate as National Assayer with the exclusive mandate to assay all gold which leave the country. It is also a leading and trusted producer and marketer of jewellery. The Company recently launched its vault service business which offers the general public the opportunity to deposit their items of precious value for storage at its underground vault.
